I was thinking that there’s not only a maximum number of relationships, but also a minimum below which you start to lose touch with reality. With only your own point of view, you can become convinced by your own bullshit and everything becomes subjective. There’s a Solipsist rpg that goes into this.
I did enjoy Piranesi but I thought it explained too much towards the end. The Course of the Heart, and TSLbtRA did this better.
On the Tarot/Water point, I’m very much into thematic unity in games. Sometimes it’s explicit, such as Blake in my Trail game, and sometimes it’s implicit like Strong Women/Anima in my CoC d20 game. It’s a reminder to the players that they are Somewhere Else without having to state it overtly and bring them out of that place.
